It is 2054, and the law is lawless in Drawbridge County, but things take a turn for the worse when unit 154, a very expensive sub-entity machine of the Common Multiple Sector of Catgut Enterprises, a unit renamed Crook, starts to kill people it is designed to anticipate, mimic and protect. And Special Operative Web Angledrop is sent to bring it back to Catgut blown, wrecked, or disintegrated. His mission becomes difficult, as believing they found treasure at the sight of the very expensive human companion, multiple people take it home only to meet their deaths.
