This day-to-day falsification of the past, carried out by the Ministry of Truth, is as necessary to the stability of the regime as the work of repression and espionage carried out by the Ministry of Love [a torture chamber]  … The past is whatever the records and the memories agree upon … the past is whatever the Party chooses to make it.”

If one were to incur the wrath of the state (not a difficult thing to do) one might be voided, becoming “an unperson.” The book describes one such man: “He did not exist; he had never existed.” As the Party slogan declares: “Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”
